How Our Beliefs Shape Us

I read about an experiment where researchers placed a large fish in the middle of an aquarium with minnows to feed on. The fish fed to its delight. Then the researchers decided to place a glass partition in the aquarium, dividing it in two. After the fish had eaten all of the minnows on his side of the partition, it could see the other minnows through the glass but it couldn’t get to them. It thrashed, bumped, and bashed its body against the glass partition, but to no avail. Since it couldn’t get to them, it formed the belief that it was impossible for it to get those minnows. It gave up and stopped trying.

Then the researchers removed the glass partition and allowed the minnows to swim all around it. It could see them and feel them but since it believed those minnows were no longer available to him, that they were forever locked away from its reach.  It starved to death in the middle of an aquarium full of food.

Everywhere you look, people are starving to death in the middle of aquarium teeming with food.Everywhere you look, people are blinded to the prosperity that surrounds them, deaf to the sound of opportunity knocking on their own front door, insensitive to the intuitive feelings that flood their entire being.

Some say they have been chained by circumstances; a lack of good education, poor parentage, etc.  But really, you are held back not by these things but by your beliefs. You see, it has been proven by so many authorities in science, religion, psychology, even by others who have succeeded, that you can improve your outer condition if you improve your inner life.

A lot of us fail not because we don’t have what it takes to succeed, but because we believe we can’t and we stop trying too soon, sometimes just at the point of our breakthroughs. We give up like that fish in the aquarium when our initial efforts don’t yield any success. We write ourselves off even before the world does.

Folks, you don’t need to be in lack, to live mediocre lives, to always be on the lookout for aid in a world filled with abundance. Yes! This world has limitless resources in it. Take a look around you, you can find men and women living the life of their dreams, being successful in their endeavours while you are just struggling to make ends meet.

“It doesn’t matter how young or how old you are—if you want your life to thrive you must have the courage to step into tomorrow.” – Robert Schuller

You have to believe in yourself, in your abilities, ideas and desires. Believe that somehow, some time, somewhere, you can achieve your heart’s highest goal.   You can make it happen somewhere, it may not be where you are today. You can make it happen some way, even if you have to do things differently.  You can make it happen someday, maybe not today, maybe not this month, or even this year.  Perhaps now is your preparation time. At time where you have to develop and prepare yourself, acquire new skills, new experiences required for attaining your goals.
