Daily Wisdom: Get Ahead of Yourself

Our business in life is not to get ahead of other people, but to get ahead of ourselves. To break our own record, to outstrip our yesterdays by todays, to bear our trials more beautifully than we ever dreamed we could, to whip the tempter inside and out as we never whipped him before, to give as we never have given, to do our work with more force and a finer finish than ever,—this is the true idea,—to get ahead of ourselves.

To beat someone else in a game, or to be beaten, may mean much or little. But to beat our own game means a great deal, whether we win or not, we are playing better than we ever did before, and that’s the point after all—to play a better game of life.

Live your greatest life!

Be Somebody!

It was said of Abraham Lincoln that when his mother was about to die, and he was by her sick bed she said to him “Be somebody Abe” and Abraham Lincoln took those words to heart. Little wonder he strived all his life and never gave up in spite of the number of times he tried and failed until he became somebody.

Many of us today need to be told those same words because we have settled into being “nobodies”. Or in the words of Zig Ziglar we have become wondering generalities. God created you to make impact, to become somebody in this world. He never intended anyone to be and die in mediocrity. It is time for us to do an inner inspection of our gifts, talents, skills, abilities given to us by God that we have allowed to become dormant.

Take a look at your life are you living at your best? Is the person you are right now, the best you could have been given the amount of investment made on you by God? Are the results you are producing now the best you could have produced given your talents and creativity? Continue reading Be Somebody!

Enough of Just Hoping

Life is a challenge, a struggle, a push, to be the best you can be, to make the most of your life. But in that struggle, push, or challenge is the value of life. Those who don’t push, don’t succeed. Those who sit by and whine and complain always remain that way.

A lot of us are hoping and wishing for a good life. We believe God is going to take care of our future for us, that everything is going to turn out just fine in the end. Sure I believe in miracles and I know that God has good plans for us. But those plans won’t come to pass without us playing our own roles.

You can’t sit around and expect things to work out without you doing anything. Stop hoping without taking action. Stop wishing without doing. Let me tell you the truth, your life isn’t going to change, if anything it is going to change for worse if you don’t get up and start acting on it. Continue reading Enough of Just Hoping

Keep Going

Tales of success and breakthroughs are often made to appear so easy.  We’re seduced by the tales of actors and actresses being discovered by a famous producer at the neighbourhood store or mall, or a classmate who got a dream job with mouth watering salary just by showing up at the job fair. We see an author hit the big time after just one appearance on Oprah or an upcoming artiste signed by a big time record label after submitting a demo-it all seems easy and exciting. It’s easy to be seduced by this stress-free easy money tales. The trouble is these kinds of stories are very addictive and cause you to forever remain in dreamland.

As easy and sweet as most success stories may sound, that isn’t all there is to the tales. The truth is all the people we think are overnight successes, people we consider as very lucky weren’t. Nobody is an overnight success, we just didn’t notice them until they were “made”. All the true successes of this world went through the process; they hung on in spite of the challenges. Behind very bestselling author are the many unread and unnoticed books. Behind every Grammy award winning artiste are the countless nights in the studio, the many times record labels have turned them down, the many times they struggle for time, even for free shows. Nobody just gets on Oprah overnight, they started somewhere, were rejected a lot of times before the break came. Continue reading Keep Going

Rise Above Your Limitations

Many of us have been trained from infancy to think small thoughts. Our minds have been saturated with the thoughts of poverty, lack, scarcity, limitations etc. And if you are from, or live in my part of the world, then you hear talks of poverty and limitation from morning till night, you see poverty-stricken conditions everywhere. Everybody around is talking limitation, scarcity, lack, diseases, failure. Little wonder there is so much lack and want around.

Folks, let’s break this bond. Do not repeat the poverty and limiting conditions of your parents, families, and environments. It starts with the belief, with developing a positive mental attitude. No matter how black the outlook or how rusty your environment is, positively refuse to see anything that is unfavourable to you. Refuse to see the obstacles. Refuse to see any condition which wants to enslave you, and keep you from rising above your environment, and keep you from living your greatest life!

Remember, “The man who is bound to win, believes he is going to be prosperous; he starts with the understanding with himself that he is going to be a successful man. A winner and not a loser.”

Have faith. The Bible says; “…Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” – Matthew 17:20

It Is Up To You

Do you find yourself doing things and making decisions because you think you had no choice? At every point in our lives, we had a choice. “God created us to be a people capable of making choices. And God has always given us the power of choice.”

In the Bible, Joshua told the Israelites:

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the river….But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

We’ve always had the power to choose, but the problem is that too often we forget we have a choice. Yet we make choices consciously and unconsciously all of our lives. We choose; when to sleep, when to get out of bed, what to wear, what to eat, where to go etc…unconsciously.

So what is it going to be for you: A positive attitude or a Negative attitude? Greatness or Mediocrity? Success or Failure? Wealth or Poverty? Health or Sickness? Better or Bitter? – It is up to you. “The paths of our lives take are largely determined by the choices we make every day.”

“Choice is the starting point to everything we do in life.” Bad things may happen to you, in fact bad things happen to everyone. You may make mistakes, you may get knocked down by hard times, but it is really up to you, whether you will remain down, or seek for ways to improve and change your condition, as Proverbs 18:15 advises; “Wise men and women are always learning, always listening for fresh insights.”

In the midst of life’s difficulties, you can CHOOSE to overcome, CHOOSE to “live your greatest life.” – It is up to you!

What is holding your back? Is it your colour? Disability? Poor parentage? Lack of Education? Poverty? Relationship? Whatever you feel is the reason stopping you from succeeding in life, holding you back from aspiring and living the life of your dreams, there are millions of people who Have faced worse challenges, surmounted them and gone on to live their greatest lives.

Among the world’s greatest heroes, inventors, entrepreneurs, celebrities, athletes, are many who were born into poor families and countries, and who rose to the peak of their careers, calling against all the odds, some of them without a college education, just with their determination, persistence, faith, energy and the mercy of God.
All that you need to succeed on this earth has been given you by God. “With five chances on each hand and one unwavering aim, no boy, however poor, need despair”. –O.S. Marden

Success is available for everyone who has energy and ability to seize his or her opportunity. It doesn’t matter whether you are born black, white, green, yellow, red. Or whether you have a college education or not; Bill Gates, Steve Jobs(RIP), Mark Zuckerberg, Gabe Newell, Michael Dell, are among the famous people who didn’t have a college degree.

Folks, if you have a purpose that drives you, a faith in God to bring your desires to pass, the ability to persevere no matter what comes your way, nothing, neither men nor demons can keep you down down.

You Have No Excuse

Meet Kyle Maynard. A man born with a medical condition known as congenital amputation that has left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees. Yet he has gone on to do amazing things with his life.
Kyle Maynard is a motivational speaker, author of a best seller titled; No excuses, entrepreneur and athlete. Despite being born with arms that end at the elbows and legs near the knees, Kyleʹs wrestled competitively, set records in weightlifting, fought in mixed martial arts and most recently became the first man to crawl on his own to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Folks, if he doesn’t see any reason to make an excuse, if he doesn’t see anything that would stop him from having an extraordinary life, then we have no right to make excuses. We have no reason not to go after our dreams. There is no disabilty, there is only hope and strong belief.

Below are some of my favourite Kyle’s quotes;

“What is the nature of a disability? Is it physical? Or is it more about fear? When they doubted me, they imagined being in my shoes.. ‘if i were Kyle, i couldn’t do it.’ They had no idea about the beliefs, the training’s, the sacrifices that I had made to make it possible. When someone doubts you, they aren’t doubting you. They are doubting themselves in your shoes.”

“I’ve always believed that anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless. I’ve always had this attitude about no excuses. A belief that I can go on and do what I need to do. To go on, to succeed, regardless.”

“It’s not what I can do; it’s what I will do. If you wake up and try to help one person and change that person’s life, every obstacle you face in front of you is worth it.”
