How To Have An Unhappy Life

Unhappiness comes when we put our hopes and trust in our fellow humans instead of putting them on God and ourselves. When we are able to eradicate this need of others and begin to believe that our lives direction is determined by God and our own efforts, we will see how happy we become despite the circumstances we find ourselves.

I can tell you this because I have been a victim of this. There were times, a few years ago when I blamed my family for my situation. I felt unloved and held bitterness in my heart, and the result was my lack of progress.

You see the fact is, you can never move forward when you are dwelling in the past when you are heavily laden with burdens because the mind needs to be totally free for it to think clearly.

A couple of weeks back I met a lady who still blamed her situation on a failed relationship of 5 years back. She went on lamenting and blaming the guy for being responsible for her still being single because he left her for another. The guy is obviously not aware of this and had moved on from then to start his own family, yet she was still stuck in that chapter of her life. Continue reading How To Have An Unhappy Life

Life isn’t a Competition

Some years ago when I just left the University and was still job hunting, I used to feel very frustrated and sad about the slow pace of my life; I didn’t have a job yet, I was still living with my parents and I was far away from most of my goals. This feeling always becomes worse when I meet an old school mate or someone I knew back then who is doing better than me.

As I grew closer to God and devoted my life to reading more, I realized that there isn’t any need to compare my lie with others, as most times it leads to anger, envy or depression which will inhibit our own growth. I also discover that in life we must not all begin our journey at the same time and it is irrelevant if others have left you behind as long as you are focused on where you are going.

Are you going through this phase in your life? Are you constantly measuring your success with that of others? Or is someone close to you always comparing you with other people and making you feel like you are not doing much in your life. My friend if that is the case with you, I want you to remember these words from the scripture spoken by the wisest man that ever lived; “I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skilful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. But time and chance happened to them all.” Continue reading Life isn’t a Competition

Don’t Let Your Past Ruin Your Future

One of the major causes of depression is always dwelling our minds on the missed opportunities or the many chances we didn’t take in the past. Little wonder the scripture instructs us to forget the past and turn our backs on the former things we had lost, the missed chances or opportunities.

Folks whatever your past has been, forget it. Because always going back to the past can cast a shadow on the present, and cause us to live in sadness, and in ingratitude. “There’s nothing more foolish, nothing more wicked than to drag the skeletons of the past, the hideous images, the foolish deeds, the unfortunate experiences of yesterday into today’s work to mar and spoil it.”

For some of us, this is why our relationships don’t ever work. I remember a time I was in a relationship with someone who always stores up all my “sins” and misdeeds of the past and reel them out anytime I wrong her. She will remind me of what I did a month, a year ago and so on. And I always thought to myself that if God acted this way with us, will we ever be alive today?

There are people who are stuck in the past. Physically they are in 2015, but their minds are still in 2014, or way back in 2005, when they failed an examination, or an interview, or when their spouse left them. They keep brooding over the events and blame themselves for everything that went wrong. Folks the fact that we failed once or twice, or thrice…even repeatedly in our lives doesn’t make us failures. Imagine the wonders we could do with our lives if we only forgot the past. If we could be courageous enough to shut the door on our past mistakes or failures and start our lives afresh.
