Most of us know the story of Thomas Edison, his inventions and their relevance in our world today, several years after his death.

Did you know he arrived New York from Boston (USA) friendless, and heavily in debt due to his failed experiments in Boston? I stumbled on an old interview of his in which he shared the principles that caused him to succeed in life and business.

I have decided to share those principles with you, as they are still very true today as they were back then, and they help you immensely in your journey to success:

  1. Being broke and hungry is a blessing

When Thomas Edison was asked if he believed hunger, and lack can compel a person to achieve success, he said “It certainly makes him keep a sharp look out. I think it does push a man along.”

I totally agree with this statement. I too believe being broke and hungry is a blessing, as it pushes you to go the extra-mile to do anything legitimate to change your situation. (see The power of broke book by Daymond John)

So rather than complain about your present state, let it be the fire that you need to drive you to success.

  1. Be willing to put in long hours on your goals

How hard do you work on your dreams and goals? I find that most people lack the ability to spend enough time working on their dreams and goals. Folks working 8am – 4pm or 9am – 5pm will only earn you a living in most cases. If you want to build your business and bringing huge success, you must be willing to work longer than 5pm.

Thomas Edison said, for 15 years he worked for 20 hours a day. Now while that may be going to the extreme, that was how much time he had to give in order to be who he is to us, and carved his name in the tablet of immortality. Continue reading 5 Secrets of Thomas Edison’s Success

Most of us are in wrong places in our lives; wrong jobs, wrong careers, wrong courses of study, wrong businesses, wrong churches, wrong neighbourhoods, wrong marriages/relationships. I mean you thought you have found it, only to discover you are a square peg in a round hole.

Maybe you are in that job, business, relationship, school etc because of circumstances or maybe it was your parent’s fault, who decided to train you in the way they ought to go instead of the way you should go. But whatever is the reason why you are in the wrong place in life, the result is always the same – struggles, unhappiness, and ultimately failure.

Every one of us is created with some unique gifts that match a particular field, to be in a certain kind of relationship and if you are out of your place, you may end up struggling all through life. In today’s world, those who are leaders in the workplace and marketplace are men and women who have found out how to solve complex problems without even inventing anything new. Why then do some of us think that one needs to invent or create revolutionary device, concept or product before we can be said to have done something original?

Folks you don’t need to invent or create afresh before you can stand out in your industry or market. The most in-demand skill today according to the future of job report of the world economic forum, is complex problem solving. So to stand out, you only just have to find a problem around you, your organization, neighbourhood, state, or country and solve.

Look around you what is wrong? Then go solve it! Too Afraid to Quit?

It takes a lot of courage to begin something; a project; a relationship; a new business; a course of study and so on. It also takes a lot of courage to persist in a task, a dream, an assignment that’s why there are far more starters and few finishers.

But I have also observed that it takes a greater amount of courage to let go of something, or a person that you are convinced has failed, after you’ve put in so much time, energy, resources, and sacrificed everything you’ve got to get to the point you are. But in life we need to learn to develop the courage to let go sometimes, as it is dangerous to hold on to something that has failed.

Some of us are in relationships that are not bringing us happiness any longer. We complain about our partners’ attitude toward us, we are sick of the relationship, yet we are too scared to let go – because we fear we may not find another person soon, or we buy into the false idea that all guys and ladies are the same, “the Devil  you know is better than the Angel you don’t know.

That kind of thinking is failure thinking. Folks nothing stimulates, inspires and increases performance in a person’s life like being in the right relationship. Have the courage to let go of any relationship that makes you feel weak and valueless. Continue reading Too Afraid to Quit?
