Contrary to the beliefs of a lot of folks, it isn’t their lack of money, lack of skills, hard luck, or lack of connections that is responsible for their mediocre results. Rather it is simply a lack of persistence. Too many people give too soon.

Persistence is a very important quality we must possess if we are to reach our destined heights in life. There are several scriptures of the Bible that stress the importance of persistence in the work of God. One of such is 1 Corinthians 15: 58: “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.”

Folks as with your Christian work so it is it life. Achieving anything great in life requires persistent effort and constancy of purpose. Staying at something long after the excitement of the moment is gone. Persistence always gives confidence. Everybody believes in the person who persists. They may meet misfortunes, sorrows, and reverses, but everybody believes that they will ultimately triumph because they know there is no keeping such individuals down. Success by Luck?

Most of us believe the wrong stories about how to become successful. We are buying into these lies like; “you don’t need to work so hard”, “you need fortune or good luck to smile on you” “just stay positive, pray and believe” and so on and you will become successful. I guess that’s one of the reasons why so many youths have given into playing the lottery to get rich.

Agreed there is a certain amount of randomness to life, but more often success and failure are all about making choices and repeating them most of the time. Our society always like to use certain labels to describe successful people, we are told they got lucky, they had a miracle, they didn’t work that had, they just prayed and believed but while all that may be true, successful people didn’t just do only that, they made good choices and decisions.

Unfortunately today many of us are not willing make the right choices and decisions yet we want to be successful. We consider the right choices as being too difficult a sacrifice to pay now. Many of us are not willing to delay gratification; if come across little money, all we think about is how to spend it. Successful people understand that they have to spend their time on things that matter, always focusing on their dreams and goals. They face their responsibilities and hold themselves accountable. They are always willing to step out of their comfort zones and face their fears even when it will be much easier to stay where they feel safe. Continue reading Success by Luck?

What is a Miracle?

What is a miracle? One dictionary defines it as “any amazing or wonderful occurrence”, or “a marvellous event manifesting a supernatural act of a divine agent.” I guess many of us would accept these definitions or have definitions closer or similar to these. As a young Christian boy, I use to crave after miracles, signs and wonders. I like attending events that blind people received their sights, the deaf heard, the cripple walked, and people with terrible sicknesses healed. These to me are miracles – according to the world, something unexplainable; amazing; wonderful; divine; supernatural.

The scripture tells us God daily loads us with benefits (miracles, blessings). Every day that passes we experience a miracle, but we never notice them since we expect miracles to be spectacular, grand, supernatural, unexplainable and so on. Sometimes our miracles and blessings are intangible, so we don’t pay attention to them. A miracle doesn’t have to be amazing; the favours we receive unsolicited for are miracles. The times you run the red light, or over speed and you are not given a ticket is a miracle. Many times when we tell the stories about our lives, we talk about the challenges, the obstacles and the sorrows we faced, the number of disappointments we have faced, the many cold nights we passed, the much heartbreaks we have suffered, we forget to mention, notice, recognize the source of the strength to out-last those sorrows. We came out of those events unbroken, when there are others who suffered less of what we faced, yet never survived it. Continue reading What is a Miracle?

Take Action

There is a story in the Bible gospel of John, about a pool by the sheep gate in Jerusalem where an Angel comes in periodically to stir the water, and any person that enters into the pool first after the angel’s action was healed of his or her diseases.

Around this pool were gathered so many people with diverse afflictions, all waiting for the angel, and to get into the water. Among these group was a particular man who had been sick for thirty eight years, and had been waiting along with the others for an opportunity to get into the pool. Now it so happened that Jesus passed along that way one day, and seeing the man, He asked him; “Do you want to be made well?” But our man instead of answering the question directly, reeled out so many excuses why he was still lying down there – He told Jesus how didn’t have any family member or friend to assist him get into the pool, and so on.

You see like that man, there are so many of us who just wait. We sit around, we are where we are because we are waiting for the world to give us a chance. I hear and see it around me all the time; “oh if only I had a rich Dad or Uncle, I wouldn’t be here at this level”; “I am here because nobody wants to help me out.” Folks, the world have never given anyone a chance. Think of the big names we hear of today. The many great men and women who are reshaping our world today got where they are through their imagination, self-confidence, initiative and hard work.

It doesn’t matter how highly educated you are, whether you got first class degree from the Ivy League universities around, your education is worth nothing to you and the world if you don’t take action. Life requires you to take action. When Jesus got to heal that man, He asked him to take action: “Arise, take your bed and walk.” It’s the same thing we ought to do if we are to live our greatest lives.

Rise up from your complains, excuses, fears, worries, doubts…and WALK. Enough of your victim stories – Take Action. “Take responsibility for your own happiness and success. Your friends and family may reach out to you in times of need. Be grateful for that, welcome their efforts, but keep pushing on your own too. The more efforts you put in, the more opportunities you create.” – Nick Vujicic
