Unhappiness comes when we put our hopes and trust in our fellow humans instead of putting them on God and ourselves. When we are able to eradicate this need of others and begin to believe that our lives direction is determined by God and our own efforts, we will see how happy we become despite the circumstances we find ourselves.
I can tell you this because I have been a victim of this. There were times, a few years ago when I blamed my family for my situation. I felt unloved and held bitterness in my heart, and the result was my lack of progress.
You see the fact is, you can never move forward when you are dwelling in the past when you are heavily laden with burdens because the mind needs to be totally free for it to think clearly.
A couple of weeks back I met a lady who still blamed her situation on a failed relationship of 5 years back. She went on lamenting and blaming the guy for being responsible for her still being single because he left her for another. The guy is obviously not aware of this and had moved on from then to start his own family, yet she was still stuck in that chapter of her life. Continue reading How To Have An Unhappy Life→
Some years ago when I just left the University and was still job hunting, I used to feel very frustrated and sad about the slow pace of my life; I didn’t have a job yet, I was still living with my parents and I was far away from most of my goals. This feeling always becomes worse when I meet an old school mate or someone I knew back then who is doing better than me.
As I grew closer to God and devoted my life to reading more, I realized that there isn’t any need to compare my lie with others, as most times it leads to anger, envy or depression which will inhibit our own growth. I also discover that in life we must not all begin our journey at the same time and it is irrelevant if others have left you behind as long as you are focused on where you are going.
Are you going through this phase in your life? Are you constantly measuring your success with that of others? Or is someone close to you always comparing you with other people and making you feel like you are not doing much in your life. My friend if that is the case with you, I want you to remember these words from the scripture spoken by the wisest man that ever lived; “I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skilful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. But time and chance happened to them all.” Continue reading Life isn’t a Competition→
When I was a little boy attending Sunday School, I used to hear this song in my classes a lot; “Cast your burdens unto Jesus for He cares for you…” as I grew older in the Scriptures, I discovered that the song was taken from a verse in the Bible “Casting all yours cares upon Him, for He cares for you.” Another says, “Cast your burdens unto the Lord for He will sustain you” in spite of all these assurances many of us are still holding unto our heavy burdens and refusing to let go even when our growth is being inhibited by them.
God has promised to sustain and help us if we cast our worries, stresses, anxiety, difficulties, problems, fears on Him but those of us who wouldn’t let go and are still holding unto our grieves, fears, and challenges in spite of these assurances and promises will be permitted to do us. I have come to discover that as merciful and all powerful as God is, He never imposes His blessings and gifts on anyone who isn’t willing to accept them. Continue reading God’s Waiting to Bless You→
Some of you are always talking about your past; your past achievements; your past successes; your past relationship and marriages. Meaning that nothing really grand is happening to you now or in the future. When you look at your future you do so with the eyes of fear and worry, thinking that you have lived your best years and achieved your best successes in the past.
Folks if this is the case with you, cheer up and never worry because an old Italian proverb says, “Do not worry. When God shuts a door, He opens a window.” Your past isn’t your best. The relationship you just lost isn’t going to be your last nor isn’t going to be your fondest.
Stop looking back in regret of your mistakes and inaction…yes you made the mistakes but there still opportunities ahead for you in the future. In my own life I have done so many mistakes too that I thought my life would never move ahead. I have also experienced good times too, but I know that I have more years ahead of me filled with great opportunities for me to take – same also with you. Continue reading Better Days Ahead!→
“This one thing I do forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” – St. Paul.
Many of us are still brooding over the past. We are still weeping over that lost relationship; that lost job, that misfortune; that death; that betrayal; those wrong words we said; those things we failed to do that led us into failure and so on. But folks brooding over the past, however foolish, devastating, painful it has been is unhelpful and a complete waste of strength and opportunities of the present.
There is an old Japanese proverb that says, “My skirt with tears is always wet, I have forgotten to forget.” Unfortunately today, many of us have forgotten to forget and that is why our lives aren’t growing and we are still experiencing difficulties. If this is the case with you, adopt the attitude of St. Paul who forgot the things that were in the past behind him, whether they were mistakes, disappointments, and failures or they were achievements and success. One of my favourite scriptures say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” So many of us are carrying one or more burdens; for some us, we carry financial burdens – we are hard pressed because of lack of money. For others it is health challenges; still for some it is emotional burdens, and so on. But whatever the burdens you carry, all we have been asked to do is leave it to God.
I have discovered that many of us find these simple words so hard to follow. We could travel the lengths of the earth in search of solutions, call all the contacts in our phones, bath in rivers, visit grave yards, do all manner of things to find solutions to our problems, but always fail to believe that you can get your challenges solved by leaving them to God.
Friends, there’s no point racking your brains to provide answers to your challenges. Just leave it to God. Even if there is delay, refuse to be impatient. Know it is for the best. It must be so, for the Highest has taken charge.
In my own life, I have experienced this work; two years ago, I had a series of challenges in my life, I had tried my best to get the problems solved but it looked like it wasn’t going to be possible, then I took the advice of Joel Osteen, and wrote my problems down in prayers to God. I thought I should share this with you today: God often seems to place His children in places of deep difficulty, leading them into a corner from which there is no escape. He creates situations that human judgment, even if consulted, would never allow. Yet the cloudiness of the circumstance itself is used by Him to guide us to the other side. Perhaps this is where you find yourself even now.
Your situation is filled with uncertainty and is very serious, but it is perfectly right. The reason behind it will more than justify Him who brought you here, for it is a platform from which God will display His almighty grace and power.
He not only will deliver you but in doing so will impart a lesson that you will never forget. And in days to come, you will return to the truth of it through singing. You will be unable to ever thank God enough for doing exactly what He has done.
One of the major causes of depression is always dwelling our minds on the missed opportunities or the many chances we didn’t take in the past. Little wonder the scripture instructs us to forget the past and turn our backs on the former things we had lost, the missed chances or opportunities.
Folks whatever your past has been, forget it. Because always going back to the past can cast a shadow on the present, and cause us to live in sadness, and in ingratitude. “There’s nothing more foolish, nothing more wicked than to drag the skeletons of the past, the hideous images, the foolish deeds, the unfortunate experiences of yesterday into today’s work to mar and spoil it.”
For some of us, this is why our relationships don’t ever work. I remember a time I was in a relationship with someone who always stores up all my “sins” and misdeeds of the past and reel them out anytime I wrong her. She will remind me of what I did a month, a year ago and so on. And I always thought to myself that if God acted this way with us, will we ever be alive today?
There are people who are stuck in the past. Physically they are in 2015, but their minds are still in 2014, or way back in 2005, when they failed an examination, or an interview, or when their spouse left them. They keep brooding over the events and blame themselves for everything that went wrong. Folks the fact that we failed once or twice, or thrice…even repeatedly in our lives doesn’t make us failures. Imagine the wonders we could do with our lives if we only forgot the past. If we could be courageous enough to shut the door on our past mistakes or failures and start our lives afresh. When we meet losses or reverses, and when all doors seem to be closed against us, let us not fall down into gloom and despair. Rather let us remember that God can open all doors for us. We may regain our loss when we leave it to God. We may enter pastures green, and realize more than we ever envisioned before. The doors of heaven open to realms that are vast, and to richness that is limitless.
When we seem to have lost our way, and do not know where to turn; when situations are confusing, and darkness enfolds our world completely, remember that God knows the way; and can lead us even in the blackest of nights. There is a light stronger than all the darkness in the universe. That light can clear the way and lead us directly into freedom and peace. All you have to do is leave all your cares and troubles to God. You will be amazed at how soon confusions are stilled, how soon conditions adjust themselves and adversity change into blessings when we in true faith, I leave it to God.
